Windows
Upgrade Strategy
There are four ways in obtaining a copy of Microsoft Windows
XP with licenses:
Buy a machine with Windows XP already installed. This
is the most expensive, inefficient way to acquire an operating
system. You may license products through an Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM). These products, such as Windows operating
systems, come installed when you purchase a new computer.
Buy a full version copy at retail. This appears to be
the second most expensive way of upgrading, but may be questionable.
However, when you evaluate the existing equipment, additional
costs arise as seen in the Windows 98 and Windows ME exhibits.
The expense is going to be based on your need to upgrade
hardware and software. Compatibility is always a concern.
Windows XP is not supported by all devices, especially those
products before its introduction. Ultimately, this could
end up costing more than the machine itself. Full Packaged
Product (FPP) which are physical, shrink-wrapped boxes of
licensed product that can be purchased in a local retail
store or any local software retailer.
Buy an upgrade version at retail. This way can be as
questionable as of the full version. All of the costs, compatibility
issues and time constraints which apply to the full version,
apply to this approach including but not limited to increased
labor costs.
Lease new equipment. This is almost always less costly
than the purchase of a new system, full version or upgrade.

Note: Microsoft Client operating systems licenses are not
sold under Volume License Agreements which apply to servers
and application software.
